DULUTH, Minn. - A bicyclist was killed Wednesday evening in downtown Duluth when he hit a pole after speeding down First Avenue East.

A pair of police officers saw the accident while patrolling on foot, according to a release from the Duluth Police Department. The officers saw the bicyclist coming down the avenue about 5:40 p.m. "at a high rate of speed," according to the release. He crossed Superior Street and attempted to ride up the ramp into Lake Place Park, next to Old Town Antiques, when he hit a pole.

The officers provided first aid, and an ambulance took the bicyclist to St. Luke's hospital, where he died. His name was not released Wednesday pending notification of family.

The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet, according to police.
