STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – Rescue crews in Colorado have found the body of a missing Duluth, Minn., man who was last seen hunting in the mountains near Steamboat Springs on Monday.
Routt County Undersheriff Ray Birch said Richard “Rick” Harkins, who was known as an avid outdoorsman, was found only a couple hundred yards from his camp by someone who had volunteered to help with the search.
It was suspected a medical condition might have caused Harkins' death. Birch said Harkins was not feeling well Sunday night, with symptoms of possible altitude sickness.
Harkins, 43, left his camp in Routt National Forest near Steamboat Springs early Monday for a solo hunt, the Routt County Sheriff's Office said. He exchanged a text message with another hunter later that afternoon, but has not been heard from since, according to authorities.
Harkins' hunting camp reported him missing late Tuesday and local authorities began a ground and aerial search early Wednesday. Authorities said Harkins, who was bow hunting, was equipped with a pack, a small tent, food and water when he left the camp.
