A man with two dozen DUI-related convictions was released Sunday from the Becker County Jail in Detroit Lakes, Minn.
Daniel Boettcher had been serving one year in jail for escaping from custody while serving a DUI sentence.
He was sentenced in May but released Sunday because of time already served.
Becker County Attorney Joe Evans said Monday a new law set to go into effect Aug. 1 will make it tougher on repeat offenders like Boettcher.
It calls for a minimum mandatory prison term of three years and a maximum of seven for those convicted of four DUIs or more within 10 years.

The current maximum jail sentence for someone convicted of DUI is a year in jail.
Boettcher, 49, has been convicted of 25 DUI-related charges.
He was arrested in Nebraska in August 2001 on a Becker County warrant and was returned to Becker County in December. Before that happened, however, Boettcher served 40 days of a 60-day sentence in Nebraska for a DUI incident that occurred there last summer.
