Cameras, lights, fast action

Quick: What do you do with a broken camera, a red balloon and a dog leash? Participants in Fargo North's 24-hour play project might have to figure that out.

Quick: What do you do with a broken camera, a red balloon and a dog leash? Participants in Fargo North's 24-hour play project might have to figure that out.

The play project, scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Friday, teams up writers, directors and actors in a round-the-clock scramble to create and perform a 10-minute play, complete with unusual props and a cobbled-together cast.

The students are encouraged to go into the prop room for inspiration on their plays.

Tom Gillen, Fargo North's drama director, says adrenaline runs high during the night, mainly because it has to.

"The kids will say the toughest part in it is staying awake. The writers will have to stay awake all night all writing," he says. "It's a lot of running around, a lot of high energy, but the kids pull it off."

Gillen says the project gives students not necessarily involved with the theater department a chance to get their feet wet.

"The cool thing about this is that you don't have to be involved in drama," he says. "This is a good opportunity for kids that have wanted to be in a play but they didn't want to audition to give it a try."

The event is free to the public. The plays will be performed in the high school theater.
