CAVALIER, N.D. - Officials here are seeking state and federal help to repair a section of a major street that collapsed during last week's flood emergency.
The sinkhole appeared on West Second Avenue North, near a bridge over the Tongue River that provides a major entrance to Cavalier City Park and the local swimming pool.
"It's the width of the street," City Auditor Katie Werner said. "It's a major safety concern, with kids going to the swimming pool."
The collapse occurred about 10 feet from the bridge.
Engineers were in Cavalier Wednesday to assess damage, she said.

Local officials hope to get emergency funds through the Federal Emergency Management Agency not only to repair the street but to address some riverbank stabilization issues, according to Werner.
Cavalier was evacuated for 60 hours last week after heavy rains filled the Tongue River watershed and threatened an emergency spillway at Renwick Dam, located in Icelandic State Park about 7 miles west of this Pembina County city of 1,300.
While the dam held, the Tongue River spilled out of its banks in portions of Cavalier.
The exact cause of the street collapse has not been determined. However, saturated soil near the park entrance is believed to have played a major role.
