Cecilia Sass, 89, of Grafton, North Dakota, died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at the Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton where she had volunteered many hours over the years.

Cecilia Sass, 89, of Grafton, North Dakota, died Sunday, July 18, 2004, at the Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton where she had volunteered many hours over the years.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Thursday, July 22, 2004, at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church in Grafton with burial in St. John's Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Barnes Family Funeral Service, Henriksen-Kamrowski Chapel on Wednesday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm with a 7:00 pm Prayer Service and one hour prior to services in the church.

Cecilia French was born June 8, 1915, on a small farm near Oakwood, ND, the daughter of Homer and Clarinda French. She graduated from St. Aloysius Academy of Oakwood in 1933 and received a teaching certificate from Valley City State Teacher's College in 1935. Cecilia taught in two rural Grafton area schools. Cecilia married Leonard Sass on October 26, 1937, at the Sacred Heart Church in Oakwood, ND. They lived in the Grafton area. Cecilia worked for Dr. J.V. Jaehning as a dental assistant for 18 years and as a waitress at the American Legion Club for 33 years. Cecilia semi-retired in 1977 to help her daughter, Susan, who was ill and to care for her grandson, Alan Berry. In 1996, Cecilia moved to Vancouver, WA, to be near her three daughters. She made her home with Carol (Dan) Schluchter, with Carol serving as her primary care giver. Cecilia returned to Grafton in August 2002 and became a resident of the Lutheran Sunset Home.

She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, the Royal Neighbors, the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by her daughters: Pat Graf of Fargo, ND, Mary Jane Olson of Vancouver, WA, and Carol (Dan) Schluchter of Neche, ND; son-in-law Mike Einarson of Vancouver, WA; nine grandchildren: Mike (Pam) Graf, Mari (Doug) Rollins, Lori Graf, Maria (Todd) Marshall, Morall (Wendi) Olson, Matt (Tina) Olson, Tom (Mayette) Schluchter, Susan (Ken) Prittie, and Alan Berry; fourteen great-grandchildren: Amber Kolrud, Logan Rollins, Sarah, Lauren, Allison and Jared Marshall, Rachelle, Dakota and Matti Cecilia Olson; Stacey Sillivan and twins Danna and Brianna Olson; Seth and Hanna Prittie; sisters: Theresa Murphy of Seattle, WA, Agnes Marie Stewart of Minneapolis, MN; sisters-in-law: Florence French, June French, Rita Sass; and brother-in-law Gene (Marlene) Sass; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents Homer and Clarinda French; husband, Leonard; daughter Susan Einarson; and two brothers: Charles and Anthony (Tony) French.
