The man accused of trashing the West Acres Verizon Wireless store got help Thursday to get a public defender.

Jason Perala, 22, faces charges of felony criminal mischief and misdemeanor simple assault in Cass County District Court for his May 12 trip to the store. Police said the disgruntled cell phone user destroyed more than $2,000 in equipment and hit a worker in the shoulder with a thrown phone.

Perala was supposed to enter a plea Thursday to the felony charge, but he didn't have a defense attorney for the hearing. Judge Cynthia Rothe-Seeger declared him partially indigent to help him get an attorney and postponed his plea.

Perala had been openly talking to the media about his frustrations with his cell phone service until Thursday, when he declined to comment further without an attorney.
