The mystery behind a pair of young German shepherds dropped off at the F-M Animal Hospital in Moorhead late last week has been solved.

But a question remains: Can a home be found for them?

A Moorhead police spokesman said the answer is probably yes, because a number of households have offered to take the animals in.

He also said the case may be reviewed by a prosecutor for possible animal abandonment charges.

The two female dogs showed up at the clinic Jan. 7, dropped off by a man who told a clinic worker the dogs belonged to a neighbor and he was tired of them jumping on his kids.

The man drove off before the clinic worker, Tabatha Pederson, could find out more.

Pederson said Thursday the clinic has since learned that the person who dropped the dogs off was the boyfriend of the dogs' owner.

Dilworth Police Chief Dave Miller said the dogs apparently were not adapting well to a new baby in the Dilworth household where the animals lived and the residents decided they had to go.

He said it is his understanding the residents tried unsuccessfully to find a home for the dogs and the animals were dropped at the animal hospital as a last resort.

Miller said efforts are being made to find homes for the dogs but added that the possibility exists they would be euthanized if new owners cannot be found by 5 p.m. today.

Moorhead police Lt. Tory Jacobson said there is a strong possibility a rural home will take both animals.

He also said it is expected reports would be forwarded to the Clay County Attorney's Office for consideration of animal abandonment charges.
