FARGO -- Fargo is getting a Chick-fil-A.

Jim Gilmour, city planning director, said Wednesday, April 19, that the company has submitted plans with the city calling for a new restaurant to be built at the site of the old TGI Friday’s restaurant at West Acres, which closed in late 2015.

The project is expected to cost about $950,000, GIlmour said. He said it is possible a permit could be approved within a month.

“Chick-fil-A is our top requested restaurant and we are looking forward to bringing them to West Acres, said Alissa Adams, senior vice president of marketing and business development for West Acres.

Adams said the shopping center is in the final stages of creating a lease for the former TGI Friday’s site and negotiations are ongoing, “so we don’t have further details to announce,” she said.

Brenda Morrow, a spokeswoman for Chick-fil-A, said that while the company hopes to serve the Fargo community in the future, "we do not currently have any locations to confirm."

Chick-fil-A has been a popular fast-casual food chain in the South for years and has been rapidly expanding its footprint. The company says it has more than 2,000 stores. Its menu is almost entirely chicken, and it is known for chicken sandwiches.

The chain was founded in 1967 by a devoted Baptist and is not open on Sundays.

When a Chick-fil-A opens in a market, the first 100 customers in line on the first day get free food for a year. There are usually some requirements, like customers have to live within a certain distance of the site and once in line people cannot leave the line or they lose their spot.

Those who win a year of free food are allowed one meal per week, for a total of 52 meals over 52 weeks.

The estimated value of providing those meals to 100 people is $32,000.

A spokeswoman for Chick-fil-A said the company would not have an immediate comment but would provide information soon.
