Cities earn 'Playful City USA' recognition

FARGO - Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo have earned recognition as 2013 Playful City USA communities by KaBOOM, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to saving play.

FARGO - Fargo, Moorhead and West Fargo have earned recognition as 2013 Playful City USA communities by KaBOOM, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to saving play.

This is the third-straight year the cities have received the award for their dedication to play, including focused efforts to increase active play in early child care education programs, active recess in elementary schools and through the annual Streets Alive events.

Other components of the award include before and after public school programs, professional development for school playground supervisor, and an annual school wellness summit.

Groups involved in helping earn the award include Active in Moorhead, Cass Clay Alive, Child Care Resource and Referral, Dakota Medical Foundation, TNT Kid's Fitness, YMCA of Cass-Clay, Boys and Girls Club of the Red River Valley, Concordia, Minnesota State University, North Dakota State University and local school districts.

Streets Alive is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. July 14 and Aug 25 in downtown Fargo and Moorhead; and from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 21 in West Fargo.
