Two Clay County commissioners face re-election challenges in Minnesota's general election Nov. 2.

The filing period for candidates in state and county elections closed Tuesday.

The filing period for candidates in city elections opens Aug. 24 and closes Sept. 7, according to the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office.

In Clay County's District 1 race, incumbent Ben Brunsvold is opposed by Jim Cummings. Both are from Moorhead.

District 2 incumbent Jerry Waller, Dilworth, is challenged by John Young Jr., Hawley.

Mike McCarthy, Moorhead, is running unopposed to keep his District 3 seat.

Brunsvold and McCarthy make $21,548 annually.

Waller declined to accept a cost-of-living adjustment and receives $21,132 annually.

Clay County District Court Judge Michael Kirk is running for re-election to a six-year term. The job carries a salary of $118,400.

The following are candidates in other offices up for grabs this fall. An (i) indicates a candidate is an incumbent.

All county commission seats carry four-year terms and races with more than two candidates will be pared down in a Sept. 14 primary election.

Becker County

Three commission seats, paying $18,811 annually, on the ballot.

District 1: Carolyn Engebretson (i), Larry Knutson and Jim Kovala.

District 3: Allen Knopf, Bobby Cates, John Lien, Karen Mulari, Gerry Schram and Archie Wiedewitsch.

District 5: Roger Winter (i) and Barry Nelson.

District Court Judge: Thomas Schroeder is running unopposed for another six-year term. The job carries a salary of $118,400.

Mahnomen County

Two commission seats paying $11,000 per year are on the ballot.

District 1: Wallace Eid (i).

District 3: John Peterick (i).

Norman County

Three commission seats, paying $12,600 per year, on the ballot.

District 1: Marvin Gunderson, Kirk Strand, Paul Nelson, Corey Hanson and Ronald Pinske.

District 3: Marvis Thompson and Steve Jacobson.

District 5: Steven Bommersbach (i).

Otter Tail County

Three commission seats paying $25,200 annually on the ballot.

District 1: Syd Nelson (i) and Mark Steuart.

District 3: Dennis Mosher (i) and Andy Leitch.

District 5: Bob Block (i).

Polk County

Three commission seats, earning $22,820 annually, are on the ballot.

District 1: Gerald Jacobson (i).

District 3: Bill Montague (i).

District 5: Don Diedrich, Darrel Loeck, and Gordon Swanberg.

Wilkin County

District 1: John Blaufuss (i).

District 3: Lyle Hovland (i) and James Braton Sr.

District 5: Robert Louis Perry (i).

School districts

In Clay County, the Ulen-Hitterdal and Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton school districts have board seats up for grabs.

In D-G-F, incumbents Marilyn Labrensz and Ronnie Tang and challengers Sandy Hawk and David Owings filed for three at-large seats, which carry four-year terms and pay $50 per meeting.

In Ulen-Hitterdal, the four incumbents - Russell Oberg, Susan Anderson, Greg Zillmer and Mike Lockhart - are running unopposed.

Board members serve four-year terms and are paid $25 for regular meetings, $35 for special meetings and $75 for all-day meetings.

Other races

In Minnesota's Seventh Congressional District, which covers much of the western part of the state, incumbent Rep. Collin Peterson, a Detroit Lakes Democrat, is seeking re-election.

He's challenged by David Sturrock, a Republican college professor from Marshall.

They're contesting a two-year seat that pays $158,100 annually.

Minnesota's state House seats are up for grabs, too. All the seats carry two-year terms and pay $31,140 annually.

District 2A: Rep. Kent Eken, DFL-Twin Valley (i), and Republican Jim Ellefson, Ada.

District 2B: Rep. Doug Lindgren, R-Bagley (i), and Democrat Brita Sailer, Park Rapids.

District 9A: Rep. Morrie Lanning, R-Moorhead (i), Democrat Lauri Winterfeldt-Shanks, a Moorhead City Council member, and Green Party candidate Wade Hannon, Moorhead.

District 9B: Paul Marquart, DFL-Dilworth (i), and Republican Tim Sycks, Detroit Lakes.

District 10A: Rep. Bud Nornes, R-Fergus Falls (i), and Democrat Maryjane Westra, Fergus Falls.

District 10B: Rep. Dean Simpson, R-New York Mills, (i), and Democrat Jim Adamietz, Henning.

District 11A: Rep. Torrey Westrom, R-Elbow Lake (i), Democrat Larry Zilliox, Alexandria, and Green Party candidate Glenn Kuehne, Alexandria.

District 11B: Rep. Mary Ellen Otremba, DFL-Long Prairie (i), Republican Marlene Clark, no address listed.
