Clay County authorities are investigating an unusual string of gasoline thefts.

Sheriff Bill Bergquist told WDAY Radio News that the thefts were reported at the Oasis convenience store in Oakport Township.

Bergquist said charges are pending against a man who apparently found a way to use the gas pumps without a credit card and without breaking into them.

Investigators began working on the case late last month and charges would be filed after a report is sent to prosecutors.

"For some reason, (the store) was missing gas even though a credit card was not used," Bergquist said. "The gas was taken during the night."

The sheriff said video helped identify a suspect but investigators are continuing to look at how the thefts were carried out and how much gas was stolen.

"Somehow, something they have done has caused the pump to pump," Bergquist said.
