FERGUS FALLS, Minn. - Several homes were evacuated here Monday morning after the driver of a pickup truck lost control of the vehicle while trying to retrieve his dropped coffee cup and clipped the corner of a house, hitting a natural gas line, police said.

The driver was southbound on Friberg Avenue approaching Beech Street when the accident happened shortly before 6 a.m., Fergus Falls Police Chief Tim Brennan said.

The pickup veered across the opposite lane and struck the corner of the house at 702 Friberg Ave., breaking the gas line.

A husband and wife escaped the home unharmed as gas built up inside, Brennan said. Three or four homes across the street also were evacuated. Residents were allowed to return after about 15 minutes, he said.

The driver's name and age were not available. It wasn't known whether he would be cited, Brennan said.
