The Young Scientist Challenge was launched in 1999 by Discovery Communications, the multimedia giant behind the Discovery Channel. The goal of the contest is to keep middle school students engaged in science at an age when for many interest in the subject starts to wane.

More than 600,000 students have since participated in the competition. Winners have gone on to speak in front of members of Congress and work with top scientist.

How you apply: Students must submit a one- to two-minute video explaining one of several suggested scientific concepts and how it inspired a practical, everyday solution. Entries are accepted from January to May.

What you can win: Semifinalists, one from each state, win $250 in cash. The 10 finalists win $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to New York City to compete in a series of scientific challenges, some of them in front of a live audience. The winner gets $50,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds ($25,000 cash value) and the title of America's Top Young Scientist.
