SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Two more South Dakotans have died due to COVID-19, raising the pandemic's death toll in the state to 821, the South Dakota Department of Health reported Tuesday, Nov. 24.

State health officials have reported 396 COVID-19 fatalities this month, as the spreading virus surged the number of people testing positive and hospitalizations to record levels, causing what health systems leaders have described as a crisis.

The state has the highest rate of new deaths per capita over the past 14 days, according to The New York Times. Deaths are reported by state officials based on death certificates, which can be filed up to seven days after someone dies.

The state Department of Health reported another 1,011 people had tested positive for the virus on Tuesday, raising the all-time count to 74,859.

South Dakota is the No. 4 state for the number of new COVID-19 cases per capita over the past week, behind North Dakota, Wyoming and New Mexico, according to the Times. The state has slipped in the rankings, as South Dakota's rate of new cases has slowed and other state's have seen their own surges worsen.

There were 574 people in South Dakota hospitals due to the virus, with 86 new hospitalizations reported Tuesday by health officials The day's hospitalizations was below the all-time high of 607 set Nov. 10, and has remained relatively stable over the past week in the high 500s.

There are 16,657 people who have tested positive and are still considered able to transmit the virus, the Health Department reported Tuesday. That's significantly down from a Nov. 15 high of 19,360. The number of daily active cases has averaged 17,615 over the past week.

Another 1,702 people who had tested positive for the virus have recovered, raising the recovered total to 57,381.
