SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Seven additional South Dakotans have died with COVID-19, the highest toll reported in a single day in nearly two weeks, according to the South Dakota Department of Health, Friday, Oct. 15, though active case counts among state residents continues to decline.

SDDOH reported 185 South Dakotans remain hospitalized with the virus, continuing a decline from early October when over 220 state residents were hospitalized. Overall, the active case count ticked down to 5,868 people.

Still, new COVID-19 hospitalizations remain steady at about 30 a day and there are a steady stream of newly reported fatalities — data that usually lags a surge in reported cases and lags further since death certificates may be filed up to 14 days after a death.

South Dakota's COVID-19 death toll now stands at 2,189, with 47 fatalities reported in October thus far.

South Dakotans have increasingly sought to get vaccinated against COVID-19. On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that an additional 1,848 people in the state received their initial vaccine shot, raising the statewide tally to 535,690, or 60.6% of the state's total population. About 465,000 people, or about 52.6% of the state's population, have gotten fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
