Czech couple tries to bicycle across border

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- A couple from the Czech Republic was sentenced for attempting to enter the United States by bicycling through the International Peace Garden at the U.S.-Canada border.

U.S. District Court by Judge Daniel Hovland sentenced 45-year-old Petr Nechanicky and 37-year-old Stanislava Nechanicka,to 77 days in prison and a combined $120 in fines.

The Grand Forks Herald reports ( http://bit.ly/odJcVh ) that both pleaded guilty to charges in July.

Jan Matejka, a Czech native and permanent U.S. resident, pleaded guilty Tuesday to giving a false statement in the case.

Officials say the couple drove from their home in Toronto on July 2 and parked just north of the garden. As they attempted to bicycle south, U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested the couple.
