FARGO-Nyamal Dei has announced her candidacy in the June 12 Fargo School Board election. Dei is founder and president of South Sudan READ, a nonprofit, and is a health care professional in Fargo.

In a statement released Tuesday, March 27, Dei said she is interested in serving on the school board in part because she is the mother of a daughter who has attended Fargo public schools since kindergarten and is now in middle school.

"I'm running for school board because I want to make sure that our schools, students and professionals are prepared for the future," she said. "I want our students to be college ready and to be well equipped to overcome any situation that comes their way. I want our students to be ready for the real world.

If elected, Dei would focus on four areas: representation and diversity, afterschool programs, supporting teachers, bullying prevention and safer schools.

Dei holds a bachelor's degree in health education in community health, with a minor in child development. She intends to pursue a master's degree in public health.
