A 25-year-old Dilworth man is accused of knocking out another man's teeth at a party early Sunday in Felton, Minn.

Todd Lee Sather, 103 3rd St. N.W., appeared in Clay County District Court on Monday on a felony charge of third-degree assault.

Sather, who played baseball for North Dakota State University and the F-M RedHawks, posted bail Monday and was released from the Clay County Jail.

Court records say:

Clay County Deputy Mark Empting observed a large party about 2 a.m. Sunday at 15498 180th Ave. N.

As Empting drove by, a woman stopped him and said some people at the party were refusing to leave.

As the deputy approached the area, John Klevgaard, 48, told Empting another man struck him in the face while he was trying to break up a fight.

Klevgaard, as well as other witnesses, identified Sather as the man who assaulted him, court records say.

Sather told Empting he was involved in a fight with another person when others began jumping on top of him.

Sather said he fought back in self-defense, according to the court complaint.

Klevgaard denied jumping on Sather.

In an interview Monday, Sather declined to discuss specifics of the incident while the case is pending.

Sather said striking the man was "absolutely unintentional."

"I wish it wouldn't have happened," he said.

The party followed the Felton Field Day celebration Saturday, Sather said.

Forum archives say Sather, a 2004 NDSU graduate, was hired as a mortgage banker in Fargo earlier this year.

Sather played with the F-M RedHawks for one month in 2003, he said.

Before that, the left-handed pitcher was a standout baseball player for NDSU.

Sather's next court appearance is June 27.

A phone call to Klevgaard went unanswered.
