WASHINGTON - A bill preventing the "Do Not Call" registry from expiring next year was approved Tuesday by the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee.

The registry was established by Congress in 2003, exempting those consumers who signed up from getting telemarketing calls for five years.

Sen. Byron Dorgan, D- N.D., introduced the legislation that would prevent the list from expiring in September 2008, a news release said. It still faces congressional approval.

About 350,000 North Dakotans are among millions of U.S. consumers who listed their numbers on the registry, the release said. 'Do Not Call' bill passes in committee 20071031
