A dryer fire forced the evacuation of a substance abuse treatment center Monday night in north Fargo.

Supervisors at Centre Inc., 123 15th St. N., discovered the fire in the first-floor laundry room on the north wing and tried unsuccessfully to put it out with fire extinguishers, Assistant Fire Chief Larry Schuh said.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at 8:26 p.m. About60 people were evacuated to another building just to the north, also owned by Centre Inc., while firefighters extinguished the fire, Schuh said.

The American Red Cross and Salvation Army provided cots for the displaced, Schuh said.

The laundry room received light fire damage. Smoke damage was moderate on the first floor and light on the second floor, he said.
