The Cass County Sheriff's Office will conduct a drunken-driving enforcement blitz Friday through May 23.

Officers will be out in full force on the weekends, cracking down on impaired drivers.

There were 140 fatalities on North Dakota roadways in 2009, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office. Alcohol was a contributing factor in 55 of the 140 fatalities.

Cass County Sheriff Cpl. Dean Haaland offers these tips to prevent drunken driving accidents:

  • Designate a sober driver or call a cab.
  • Take the keys from someone who has been drinking.
  • If hosting a party, provide safe rides home for those who have been drinking and provide nonalcoholic beverages for designated drivers.
  • Report any suspected drunken drivers to local law enforcement.
