FARGO – A bookkeeper accused of skimming more than $190,000 from ATMs at a Fargo truck stop has been sentenced to a year in jail and 18 months of supervised probation.

Charles John Putney, who worked for the Petro Stopping Center in Fargo, pleaded guilty to a felony theft charge in June. At Monday’s sentencing, the judge gave 43-year-old Putney jail-time credit for spending 34 days in an alcohol-treatment program.

Putney’s theft spanned an eight-year period, and it was discovered after the truck stop hired a forensic accounting firm to review the business’ records, according to court documents.

The firm found that between June 2004 and November 2012, $191,820 had gone missing from the ATMs at Petro, court documents stated.

An owner of the truck stop reported the embezzlement to Fargo police in February 2012, and Putney, a West Fargo resident, was charged in October 2013.
