Drunken driving cost Terry Fred his rank and pay for the U.S. Marshals Service in North Dakota.

Fred, 45, 1067 26th Ave. N., Fargo, received a demotion and a 30-day suspension, effective Sunday.

United States Marshal David Carpenter, who oversees the agency in North Dakota, said Fred likely will be transferred out of state.

Fred's demotion puts him in a job category that is filled in North Dakota.

The punishment, handed down by a federal disciplinary panel, stems from Fred's arrest last Feb. 23 for drunken driving and leaving the scene of two accidents. A person was injured in one accident and taken to the hospital.

Fred, who has worked for the Marshals Service for about 20 years, pleaded guilty to drunken driving about a month later. He received $650 in fines and fees, a 30-day suspended sentence and unsupervised probation for a year.

The process to hire a new chief deputy will take at least four months, Carpenter said.
