A Fargo man who police say stabbed a woman with a pocket knife now faces an attempted murder charge.

Cass County prosecutors initially charged James C. Strickland, 44, 4416 9th Ave. Circle S.W., with aggravated assault and terrorizing for the Jan. 18 incident. Police arrested him after they were called to his ex-girlfriend's apartment, where another woman was stabbed.

Witnesses said Strickland stabbed the woman in the stomach, but police said the wound did not appear life- threatening.

Assistant Cass County State's Attorney Lori Mickelson announced the amended charge Thursday at a court hearing. She was not available later to explain the new charge, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

Strickland, who has bailed out of jail, declined to comment on the case. His attorney, Steve Mottinger, said the prosecutors are overcharging the incident and Strickland never intended to harm anyone.
