Fargo man struck, killed by downtown train

FARGO - A 59-year-old Fargo man was killed early Tuesday morning after being struck by a train in downtown Fargo.

The incident was reported at 4 a.m. at Main Avenue and Fourth Street North.

The victim was dead at the scene, according to the Fargo Fire Department.

According to Fargo police, the initial investigation indicates the eastbound BNSF Railway train struck a male who was approaching the tracks from the south. The victim was identified as John Dean Westra, 59, of Fargo. The case remains under investigation.

A spokeswoman for the railroad said the train was carrying 63 loads of automobiles and that the collision happened about 20 feet east of the railroad crossing.

She said the crossing gates and lights were active at the time of the incident.
