Fargo North teacher wins national honor for work

Fargo North High School math teacher Michelle Bertsch has been honored with a 2007 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Fargo North High School math teacher Michelle Bertsch has been honored with a 2007 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

The award, administered by the National Science Foundation to about 100 individuals annually, is the nation's highest honor for educators in the fields of science and math.

Bertsch has taught in the school district for 11 years as a mathematics and physical education teacher. She now teaches advanced

mathematics and Algebra II.

Bertsch won the Fargo North High School Teacher of the Year Award in

2001 and was nominated for the YWCA Woman of the Year in 2003.

She has a bachelor's degree in secondary education and an master's in teaching, mathematics from Minot

(N.D.) State University.

As a Presidential Award winner, Bertsch received a $10,000 educational grant to be used at her discretion over a three-year period, and a trip to Washington, D.C.
