FARGO – Fargo city engineers are giving the green light to more than double the number of flashing yellow arrow signals in the city.

Fargo City Engineer Jeremy Gorden said the city plans to add 13 flashing yellow turn signals, mostly along Main Avenue and 13th Avenue South between 25th and 45th streets.

“They are a good deal for drivers,” Gorden said. With traditional signals, a driver waste a lot of time waiting at a long empty road.

“You can see forever, but you’ve got a red arrow, you can’t turn,” he said.

The new signals are also designed to increase safety for people making left turns as well as increase smooth traffic flow along busy roads.

The 13 new signals are in addition to 11 already being used throughout the Fargo, five of which were completed this week.

The city accompanied those 11 signals with announcements and special signage that explained to drivers that they need to yield to oncoming traffic and turn only when it’s safe to do so.

Minnesota has already deployed flashing yellow areas statewide, and drivers there seem to be catching on quickly, Gorden said.

Fargo doesn’t plan to include explanatory signage at the 13 new intersections.

“They’re so intuitive, I don’t think we need to anymore,” Gorden said.
