Fargo Mayor Bruce Furness announced a new tool Tuesday to help residents and visitors learn more about the history of downtown Fargo.

The "Look Around Downtown" booklet offers two self-guided tours of the city's downtown area: one focusing on the southern downtown area and the other covering the north end.

Nine other points of interest are also included in the publication. The tour includes 57 buildings.

The booklet is free and available at both branches of the Fargo Public Library and at the Planning and Development office on the second floor of City Hall, 200 3rd St. N.

To encourage citizens to take the tours, the city has organized a trivia contest with prizes donated by downtown businesses. Residents can pick up entry forms at the location where they get the booklet. Entries must be submitted by June 21.

The booklet was developed by members of Fargo's Historic Preservation Commission and city staff with a grant from the State Historical Society. The Fargo-Moorhead Heritage Society paid for building markers that identify the tour stops.

The booklet draws its inspiration and title from an earlier tour brochure, published in 1985 by the Fargo-Moorhead Heritage Society.

The city plans to put an audio version of the tour on its Web site in July at www.cityoffargo.com/planning/ . A limited number of audio CDs will also be made available in the Planning and Development Department.
