One of Fargo's four peregrine falcon eggs has hatched after the city's pair of falcons returned to their annual nesting place atop the downtown Bank of the West Building.
Eggs usually hatch in mid-May each year, and the rest of the roost should be out this week, as seen via webcam by Wickham Corwin, a district judge and local peregrine enthusiast.
The birds return to nest each March and lay eggs in mid-April. The same male falcon has returned to Fargo since 2000 and has had four female mates over the years, Corwin said.
Fargo's pair was the only in the state until another began nesting in Grand Forks in 2008.
Corwin, a board member of the Midwest Peregrine Society, will band the new hatchlings at 11 a.m. June 11. The banding is open to the public and serves as a way to track where hatchlings travel each year.
