STILLWATER, Minn. (AP) - The National Park Service has rejected a proposed bridge over the St. Croix River, saying it would hurt the scenic and recreational values of the river.
Friday's decision means the $668 million project won't move forward unless Congress intervenes.
The four-lane bridge would have connected Minnesota's Washington County and Wisconsin's St. Croix County.
Jim Rickard is with the St. Croix Valley Sierra Club. He's happy about the decision, saying it will help keep the federally protected river in pristine shape.
But supporters say the bridge would have eased congestion.

Stillwater Mayor Ken Harycki says the decision was made by Washington bureaucrats who don't understand the local needs. He tells the St. Paul Pioneer Press he'll keep fighting for the bridge.
