FERGUS FALLS, Minn. -- A Fergus Falls man who threw a knife and hatchet at police has been sentenced to prison.

Otter Tail County District Judge Thomas Stringer sentenced Kirk Hanson, 38, to 4½ years in prison.

Hanson pleaded guilty in November to two counts of second-degree assault stemming from a police standoff.

Fergus Falls Police received a report of an intoxicated male creating a disturbance at a home June 18. The man was later identified as Hanson.

Police asked Hanson to leave the house, but he refused, according to a court complaint.

Hanson told police he planned to commit "suicide by cop," saying he intended to make officers shoot him, the complaint said.

He later exited the home wielding a knife and hatchet. He threw the knife at one officer, the hatchet at another.

The hatchet nearly struck the policeman in the head, missing his face by 6 inches, the court complaint said.

Police were able to arrest Hanson a short time later.

Stringer sentenced Hanson to 33 months and $1,000 on one assault charge and 21 months and $100 on the other charge. The sentences will be served consecutively, said assistant Otter Tail County District Attorney Barb Hanson.

Stringer also ordered Kirk Hanson to undergo a chemical dependency evaluation.

He remained in the Otter Tail County Jail late Wednesday afternoon.
