A fire caused extensive damage to a south Fargo apartment unit Monday evening.

Firefighters responded to the blaze around 5:30 p.m. after neighbors saw smoke coming from the third-floor unit at 2401 20th Ave. S. in the White Hall Apartments.

The fire originated in the bathroom, and flames and smoke damage were largely contained to the unit, said Fire Marshall Norman Scott.

No one was in the apartment at the time of the fire, and the 24-plex was evacuated. No injuries were reported, Scott said.

Investigators were still trying to determine a cause Monday night, he said.

The Salvation Army was working to assist fire fighters and residents of the building. Scott said residents of the units not damaged by fire were expected to be able to return to their homes Monday night.
