FARGO - A Fargo couple's home sustained extensive damage and one of their two dogs died in an early morning fire in the Bluemont Lakes area.
Firefighters responded at about 4:25 a.m. to 2904 27th St. S. and found a fully involved deck fire that had extended into the attic, Fargo Fire Capt. Kevin Muffenbier said.
The fire broke the patio door, allowing flames to spread into the house, Muffenbier said. Firefighters had to pull down the ceiling to reach the attic fire, he said, adding there is "pretty extensive damage" to the upstairs level.
A husband and wife who were home when the fire started escaped safely with one of their dogs, but the other dog was found dead inside the house after the fire, Muffenbier said.
Investigators were on scene this morning trying to determine the fire's cause.

Muffenbier said he didn't know if the house would be a total loss.
"I would say it's probably fixable, but it's going to be expensive," he said.
The homeowners are staying with friends, he said.
