FARGO -- Tenants of an apartment building at 1121 22nd St. S. were temporarily displaced on Christmas Day morning after a fire started in one unit, spreading smoke.

The tenant reported at 8:30 a.m. there was a small fire in the wall of his apartment but he was able to put it out with water. Firefighters found charring and damaged wiring in the space behind the drywall, as well as light smoke in upper apartments.

The fire caused minor damage to the first-floor apartment and was limited to the area behind the wall.  Light smoke was found in several apartments above the unit with the fire, but there was no fire in other units.

Several occupants were temporarily sheltered in an adjacent apartment building until the building was cleared of smoke. The building fire alarm system had activated, alerting tenants to the fire.

The cause of the fire appears accidental and electrical in nature.  However, it is still under investigation.
