MOORHEAD - A truck driver who dumped a slew of garbage onto a north Moorhead road Tuesday morning, Sept. 4, said he did so as a precautionary measure after he said he saw smoke coming from the back of the truck.

The incident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. near the intersection of 11th Street and Fifth Avenue North.

Prior to dumping the garbage on the road, a group of sanitation workers had just cleared out a dumpster from a nearby apartment when one of the workers heard a loud explosion, according to Todd Bratlien, transfer plant supervisor for Moorhead Public Works.

The worker then exited the truck and noticed smoke coming from the back of the truck. Following standard procedures for fires, the truck driver then found a safe spot on the street to dump the garbage before the fire could spread to the truck.

No one was injured and the truck suffered no damage, Bratlien said.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation, though Bratlien says he believes the incident was likely caused by combusting trash.
