FARGO - Construction crews will begin tearing up part of First Avenue North on Monday to begin a reconstruction project that will last through the summer and into fall.

Crews will close First Avenue North between University Drive and 15th Street to begin the project.

Traffic will be detoured to Third Avenue North via 10th and 16th streets.

This is the first phase in a three-phase project that will span from University Drive to 25th Street this summer.

"We're very excited that this reconstruction project has finally come to fruition," Fargo Senior Engineer Jeremy Gorden said. "These improvements will provide better traffic flow and more room for bicyclists to ride safely on the roadway."

The $4.1 million project will include full reconstruction of the roadway, sidewalks, driveways, utility and sewer lines and the railroad crossing.

The road surface will be striped with a wide outside lane so bicyclists can ride on the street, and the 25th Street intersection also will see traffic signal upgrades.

Master Construction of Fargo is the contractor for the project, which is expected to be complete by October.
