March 27 - The Red River made history, nudging past its 112-year-old record crest of 40.1 feet.

Flood-fighting efforts continued, but the streets around town grew eerily still.

The North Dakota National Guard took command of several major thoroughfares, giving trucks faster access to areas in need of dikes

and sandbags.

Fargo and Moorhead schools took a bold step and canceled classes for the entire next week, and evacuees began trickling into shelters set up around the area.

Meanwhile, volunteers continued to battle levee leaks and river breakouts.

Flood watch was in full throttle.
