This is going to be a very big and important weekend as the Fargo-Moorhead metro area prepares to fight this spring's flood.

Essentially, both Fargo and Moorhead officials say they need more volunteers to fill sandbags.

In Fargo, Terry Ludlum, who is one of the people overseeing the sandbag filling operation, told WDAY Radio News that volunteers have filled about 180,000 bags so far.

But they still have a long ways to go before they reach the city's $1 million goal, Ludlum said.

City officials like Ludlum said a big turnout to produce bags this weekend is crucial to the flood fight.

Volunteers are asked to report Saturday to the Fargo Coliseum, where they will be driven by bus to sandbag central. The operation will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Larger groups of volunteers are asked to call FirstLink at (701) 476-0000 so their efforts can be coordinated and put to the best use.

Ludlum says they are not working this Sunday but a decision on bag filling next week will be made - based in part on how many bags are filled this weekend.
