SHAKOPEE, Minn. - A talented former University of Minnesota Duluth and Minnesota State-Mankato football player who earned several honors during his collegiate career has been arrested and charged with second-degree attempted murder in Shakopee.
Scott County Sheriff Kevin Studnicka said Wednesday that Dennis Ervin Carter, 25, was arrested near the scene of the shooting, which took place in the 1200 block of Chestnut Boulevard in Louisville Township at 10:40 p.m. Aug. 20. Carter played initially at UMD, then later at Mankato.
Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene for a report of a man with a gunshot wound to the neck. Authorities found a male victim with gunshot injuries to his neck and mouth. He was taken by the North Memorial Air Care to Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition. The victim, identified as Diaa Ahmen Abdelhakim, 28, told authorities that Carter owed him $35,000 and shot him during an argument.
Carter was found a short time later and arrested on a charge of second-degree attempted murder. According to a report from the Northland’s NewsCenter, Carter later told police that Abdelhakim had threatened him and that the gun accidentally went off during the altercation.
Carter was being held on $750,000 bail. He is also charged with first-degree assault and fleeing an officer.

Carter finished his senior season at Mankato last fall. He was a wide receiver and also returned kicks and punts. He led the Mavericks with 49 receptions for 964 receiving yards and nine touchdowns, averaging 80.3 receiving yards per game and 19.7 yards per catch as Mankato won the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. He earned NSIC South Division First Team honors and was named to the Don Hansen All-Super Region Three team.
Carter started his football career at UMD in 2007, catching 40 passes for 432 yards and a team-high nine touchdowns. He later enrolled at Mankato, playing for the Mavericks in 2010 and 2011, in addition to last fall.
