FARGO-A special guest was handing out awards for Washington Elementary students Friday afternoon, March 31.

Former North Dakota Gov. Ed Schafer was the presenter for the winners of the school's "Character Counts" program.

The program tries to teach students ethical values like trustworthiness, respect and responsibility.

Nineteen students, one from each classroom, received an award for demonstrating one of those values.

Washington Elementary hosts a Character Counts assembly once a month, but doesn't always have a special presenter.
