DULUTH, Minn. - Four people were injured, one seriously, when a boat crashed late on Friday on Lake Vermilion in northeastern Minnesota.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said the accident occurred about 10:20 p.m. when a boat operated by Dan Lamppa, 64, of Eveleth, struck a concrete boat pier at Moccasin Point Boat Landing.

A passenger, Steven Jacobson, 61, of Tower, was taken to Essentia Health-Virginia and later flown to St. Luke’s hospital in Duluth in serious condition, the sheriff’s office said.

Lamppa was taken to Cook Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Another passenger, Nancy Lamppa, 65, of Eveleth, was taken to Essentia Health-Virginia with non-life-threatening injuries. A third passenger, Kathy Weulander, 61, of Cook, was treated at the scene.

Operating at night and alcohol are considered possible factors in the crash, the sheriff’s office said. The accident remains under investigation.
