WHITE EARTH, Minn. -- The White Earth Tribal Police Department has purchased a computer-aided dispatch system and a new records management system for documenting and tracking calls.

The purchases were made with help from a $490,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The CAD system cost approximately $105,000 and the records management software cost another $95,000, White Earth Tribal Chief of Police Bill Brunelle said.

The remainder of the grant will go for the purchase of uniforms, weapons and other equipment, including squad cars, he said.

The purchase of the new technology will greatly enhance the department's ability to serve reservation residents and will provide a base the department can expand on, Brunelle said.

For example, he said, the CAD technology will accommodate the addition of laptop computers in squad cars at some point.

The new records management software will be shared with the Becker County Sheriff's Department, which will pay for the approximately $5,000 annual maintenance fee associated with the system, Brunelle said.
