MAHNOMEN, Minn. - A 23-year-old from White Earth accused of trying to kill a woman with a gunshot to the head was convicted Wednesday by a Mahnomen County jury of attempted murder.

Prosecutors had accused David James Bower Jr. of putting a pistol to the head of a 20-year-old woman and pulling the trigger, a shot that struck her in the left shoulder as she flinched.

The victim, a native of Naytahwaush, was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and released after the March 6 shooting.

Jurors ruled that Bower was guilty of second-degree attempted murder as well as possessing a firearm as a felon, said County Attorney Julie Bruggeman in a news release.

Sentencing is set for Nov. 10, and the maximum term of imprisonment would be 20 years, Bruggeman said.
