A Fargo native studying to be an astronaut has been awarded $8,500 from a national honor society to further her dream.

Jayleen Guttromson is one of 17 college students nationwide to receive an award this year from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. A committee chose the 2000 Fargo North High School graduate after reading a letter from her and recommendations from her professors.

For the past two years, Guttromson has participated in the NASA Johnson Space Center Co-op program, where she rotates semesters of school at Purdue University with semesters of work at the center. She planned to be back in Houston this summer to test fly a piece of hardware she built from scratch.
