North Dakota's adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Mike Haugen, 59, announced his retirement this morning.

Gov. John Hoeven said he's appointed David Sprynczynatyk as the new adjutant general.

A ceremony to formally change command is scheduled for Aug. 26.

Haugen's retirement ends a 39-year career in the North Dakota Air National Guard.

Sprynczynatyk, 55, has been director of the North Dakota Department of Transportation since Hoeven took office.

Sprynczynatyk is a major general in the North Dakota Army National Guard and was an applicant for the adjutant general when Hoeven first took office in December 2000. Hoeven asked him to run the DOT instead.

Haugen said he has no immediate plans for his retirement beyond "decompression" for some months. He turns 60 in September.

Hoeven said he will likely name an interim DOT director and then search for a new director.
