Hazard grants available to help Minnewaukan

A $5.8 million federal grant is available to help the city of Minnewaukan, N.D., move to higher ground to escape the Devils Lake flood, officials announced Thursday.

A $5.8 million federal grant is available to help the city of Minnewaukan, N.D., move to higher ground to escape the Devils Lake flood, officials announced Thursday.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple and Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., requested the grant earlier this month to help pay the costs of moving buildings or protecting critical infrastructure, such as drinking water or sewage systems.

The action announced Thursday means the hazardous mitigation grants, which require a 10 percent state and local match, will be available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

In another development, officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be in Devils Lake to provide federal, state and local officials with a review of work done to date to fortify levies and other flood-protection infrastructure.
