Don't grill German artist Hedi Schw'bel quite yet about the artwork she plans to create during her stint in Fargo. Chances are she needs some time to settle on the look of her piece. The first James Rosenquist Artist in Residence at North Dakota State University, Schw'bel is known for her site-specific installations, which tap into the location's "genius loci," or guardian spirit. Fascinated with the elusiveness of time, she often uses ephemeral materials, from paper to gelatin.

Even before arriving in Fargo, she had an inkling our state's brand of wintry weather might inform her work here. Schw'bel speaks at NDSU Downtown's Room 114 at noon today before getting to work at her NDSU Downtown studio, whose door will stay open to curious drop-ins throughout the semester. (701) 231-5174
