High school speech meet raises $2,600

The fourth Annual Laura Christenson Espejo Memorial Speech Tournament Friday at Fargo Shanley High School raised $2,600 for local charities.

More than 250 students, coaches, and judges from 16 North Dakota schools competed in the event.

Valley City won the visiting team sweepstakes, followed by Fargo North and West Fargo.

Winners of the various events were:

Prose interpretation: first, Paul Neary, West Fargo; second, Charlyn Okigbo, Shanley; third, Tomoko Matsunaga, Oak Grove.

The event honors Christenson-Espejo, who died of cancer in 2000. The daughter of Boyd and Marlene Christenson, she was an avid supporter of forensics and an advocate for the poor in the community.

Organizers said proceeds will be divided equally between the Rape and Abuse Center and the Laura Christenson Espejo Social Justice fund.
