A North Dakota Board of Higher Education member who has missed as many meetings as he's attended has resigned.

Charles Murphy of Fort Yates filed a letter of resignation to Gov. John Hoeven's office Monday evening, said spokesman Don Canton.

Murphy was absent six out of 12 board meetings since joining the board in July, including one last week in which the board approved moving ahead with a plan to seek $9.5 million to improve ConnectND.

In his letter of resignation, Murphy said the time that is required to serve on the board is more than he can devote.

Hoeven appointed the former chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to the eight-member board.

The Senate had not yet met to confirm Murphy's appointment.
